TSA has been charged with keeping us safe during our travels. It’s no easy task. Each time TSA has to search a bag, it slows down the line. Planning and packing properly can help expedite the screening process and get you on your way to your destination that much faster.

Though airlines have the final say as to what is allowed on an aircraft, TSA has guidelines on what you can bring through security checkpoints.

This Basic Rule is Known as the 3-1-1 Rule

All liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes should be in 3.4 ounces (100ml) or smaller sized containers; all of your containers should fit into one quart-sized bag, and each passenger is permitted to bring one quart-sized bag.

Containers that are larger than 3.4 ounces, regardless of the amount of product inside, must be in checked baggage. When in doubt, pack your liquids into a checked bag. Practicing this 3-1-1 rule will ensure a faster security checkpoint experience, and your fellow travelers will thank you.

You Can Carry on More Than You Think

The 3-1-1 rule is a handy way to remember how much each passenger can bring through a security checkpoint, but there are a handful of items that are exempt from the rule.

Medically necessary liquids or medications

Medical accessories such as IV bags, pumps, and syringes

Formula, breast milk, and juice for infants and toddlers

Ice packs, freezer packs and frozen gel packs necessary to cool formula or medication

When the 3-1-1 rule doesn't apply:

If you need to pack one of the listed items in your carry-on, be sure to notify the TSA officer at the beginning of the screening process. Any of the items listed above do not need to be in your quart-sized bag. To help expedite the process, label your items and remove them from your carry-on bag to be screened.
